Plot summary
In Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici and his court watch a performance. The play concerns Mâcon, where women have been barren for a generation and famine has followed. A woman goes into labor; the midwives take it for a false labor because of her years and her looks, yet she delivers a healthy boy. Her husband, the Father, looks to sell potions that promise to cure impotence. Their elder daughter is drawn to the child and sees how much could be made from him. Years later she presents the boy as her own, born of a virgin, and a following gathers with gifts. The Bishop takes her claim for blasphemy, and the Bishop's Son cannot accept it: if she is a virgin the child is not hers, and if the child is hers she is no virgin.
