Plot summary
In Mexico, the drifting American engineer Joe Wiley meets Liliana Holbrook, who arranges a room for him at an expensive hotel. Emeralds are waiting in the room, and a phone call there fixes a meeting for the next morning. At the secluded beach he is shot at and escapes into the sea, and Holbrook picks him up in a speedboat. At her home she explains that her sister Carrie went missing on a journey in Colombia. Meno Argenti, who controls the emerald trade there, visits them.

- While filming a scene in the ocean at Las Hadas, star Ryan O'Neal almost drowned and had to be rescued by stuntman Vic Armstrong.
- Original director Anthony Simmons says Ryan O'Neal "found he couldn't work with" Anne Archer because they had very different ideas about the film, and Simmons then left the production by "artistic disagreement".
- Simmons said every artist considered for the female lead was turned down for being too old, the part being meant for someone in her early twenties, but Lew Grade had already contracted Anne Archer, then a good actress in her mid thirties.
- Omar Sharif said he had "a nice secondary part, rather flash, with plenty of time off", and the shooting schedule was arranged so he could periodically return to Europe to supervise his casinos.
- Green Ice is set in Colombia but was shot in Mexico because that country was felt to be safer; the unit was based mostly out of Cuernavaca, and the Edificio Banamex in Mexico City stood in as Argenti's headquarters.
