Paul McGann

Biography

Paul McGann is an English actor who was born in Kensington, Liverpool, and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1981. He made his television debut in a 1982 Play for Today episode and came to prominence in the BBC series Give Us a Break, then won wider recognition as Percy Toplis in The Monocled Mutineer, a performance that drew acclaim. He starred with Richard E. Grant in the black comedy Withnail & I (1987). His film credits include The Rainbow, Alien 3 (1992), The Three Musketeers (1993) and Queen of the Damned (2002). He took on the role of the Doctor's eighth incarnation in the 1996 television film Doctor Who, and from 2001 reprised it in licensed audio dramas, also playing the part on screen in 2013 and 2022. He was William Bush in Hornblower, appeared in Luther, and narrates audiobooks and podcasts.

Early training
A deputy head at his school in Liverpool pushed McGann to try out for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He read from Richard III and My Fair Lady at the audition, earned his grant place, and graduated in 1981 with the Vanbrugh Award.
