Plot summary
Arthur Morel has spent his working life preparing the dead for burial in a small town in Northern England in the 1960s. Local gangster Finlay Unsworth is making a grab for power in the town, and his killings leave behind bodies that need to disappear. Finlay comes to Arthur with an offer: dispose of the corpses, and there is money in it. Arthur believes he can handle the arrangement and look the other way. He thinks of the retirement that is now close at hand. The bodies keep arriving at his door, and the work pulls him further into Finlay's business.
