Plot summary
Countess Aurelia, the eccentric madwoman of Chaillot, begins each day with a newspaper dated March 22, 1919. Five prominent men meet at a café to discuss enlarging their fortunes. A prospector offers them oil in Paris, requiring each to share a terrible secret first; he then reports that the ground beneath Chaillot is soaked in oil. The men decide to obtain the mineral rights whether or not the residents agree. Roderick, an activist and the prospector's nephew by marriage, and The Ragpicker bring word of the plan to Aurelia, who enlists her friends, among them Constance and Gabrielle.
