Plot summary
In their dressing room before a performance, the actors put on their makeup and talk among themselves. One of them says a colleague's face reminds him of a man he knew in the Resistance, and he goes on to tell the story of his adventure on Madagascar during the Second World War, when the island was an Axis-controlled French colony. In that story he poses as a supporter of the Vichy regime while secretly heading the Resistance movement there. He keeps an illegal radio station, Madagascar Libre, on the air for the Resistance, and arranges boats to carry loyal Frenchmen off the island to safety. Michel, the Chef de la Sûreté, the collaborationist police chief, keeps him under watch.

- Who or what really inspired the film is disputed: some sources say it came from the Resistance activities of lawyer Jules François Clermont, who wrote and starred in it under the name "Paul Clarus", while in 2011 The Daily Telegraph reported that writer and actor Claude Dauphin had worked with Hitchcock to recount his own time running an underground radio station in occupied France.
