Plot summary
Dominique Marceau, the elder of two sisters in a small provincial town, avoids work while her younger sister Annie studies the violin. When Annie goes to Paris for music school, Dominique swallows pills after their parents refuse to let her go, then gets her way, and the sisters share an apartment. Dominique takes up with rebellious young intellectuals, and Gilbert Tellier, an ambitious young conductor who befriends Annie, meets her at the flat. Dominique and Gilbert become involved, and their opposite temperaments bring jealousy and quarrels. At her trial for his death, witnesses describe what they saw of the pair, while her lawyer argues a crime of passion and the prosecutor condemns her as manipulative.

- Before Clouzot cast Sami Frey in the lead role of La Vérité, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean-Pierre Cassel and Jean Louis Trintignant were all considered for the part, and Trintignant was Bardot's own choice.
- Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu, one of the male leads, was fired during shooting, and then sued the producer for damages of 300,000 francs.
- While the film was shooting, Bardot's affair with Sami Frey broke up her marriage to Jacques Charrier, and in September 1960, after an argument with Charrier, she attempted suicide by slashing her wrist.
- Filming was hit by illness: Bardot's husband was hospitalised for two months with a nervous breakdown, the director's wife had a nervous breakdown in July, and in August Clouzot had a heart attack that suspended filming for a week.
- During filming, the production was also shaken when Bardot's secretary of four years sold secrets about her to the press.
