Plot summary
Three months after the events of The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe, François Perrin lives in Rio de Janeiro with his lover Christine. His friend Maurice has recovered from the nervous breakdown he suffered, and Captain Cambrai, investigating the death of Colonel Milan, intercepts a letter Perrin wrote to Maurice confirming that the events behind that breakdown really happened. Maurice refuses to testify against Colonel Toulouse, so the new minister, who wants to meet the supposed super-agent, presses for a meeting. Toulouse cannot admit that the Tall Blond was a civilian picked at random, and when Christine is kidnapped, Perrin is pushed back to Paris to play the spy again.
