Oskar Homolka
Biography
Oskar Homolka was an Austrian actor of film and theater whose career took him from Vienna to Germany, Britain, and the United States. Born in Vienna, he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army in the First World War before training at Vienna's Imperial Academy of Music and Performing Arts. He acted in more than 400 plays by the age of 30, worked under Max Reinhardt in Berlin, and appeared in the Munich Kammerspiele premiere of Brecht's The Life of Edward II of England in 1924. Spies and Soviet officials became his specialty. Alfred Hitchcock cast him in Sabotage (1936), and his performance as the uncle in I Remember Mama (1948) earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Later films include The Seven Year Itch (1955) with Marilyn Monroe and, opposite Michael Caine, Funeral in Berlin (1966) and Billion Dollar Brain (1967), playing Colonel Stok. He received the German Filmband in Gold in 1967.

Early training
Once his military service was over, Homolka began his career on the Austrian stage, having studied at Vienna's Imperial Academy of Music and the Performing Arts, the city where he was born.
First role
Homolka took the role of Mortimer in the 1924 Munich Kammerspiele premiere of Brecht's The Life of Edward II of England. Starting in 1925, he was based in Berlin, working under Max Reinhardt.
