Plot summary
Berlin is a divided city, and people in the Communist East keep trying to cross the Wall to the West. Colonel Ross gives Harry Palmer the job of getting Colonel Stok, a Soviet intelligence officer, out. Palmer is doubtful, but in the city he looks up Johnny Vulkan, a German he knew from his black market days who now runs the Berlin station. In the Soviet zone Stok asks that a West Berlin criminal, Kreutzman, be the one to bring him over. Back in the western sector Palmer meets Samantha Steel, a model, and after a night together arranges for a burglar to search her flat, turning up several false passports. He settles terms with Kreutzman: $60,000 and a set of documents.
