Norman Burton
Biography
Norman Burton was an American actor, born in New York City, who studied at the Actors Studio. After early stage work, he entered films with a small part in Fright (1956). In Planet of the Apes he was the Hunt Leader, a gorilla and the first ape that Taylor and the audience see, and he appeared as a human army officer in Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971). He was perhaps best known as Felix Leiter in Diamonds Are Forever (1971). His other films included The Towering Inferno (1974), The Gumball Rally (1976), Fade to Black (1980), and Deep Space (1988). On television, his best-remembered role was Joe Atkinson, a supervisor at Inter-Agency Defense Command, in the second season of The New Adventures of Wonder Woman. He also played Burt Dennis on The Ted Knight Show in 1978, and General George Marshall in the 1988 miniseries War and Remembrance. He taught method acting in Lakeside, California.
