Plot summary
Peter Proud teaches at a college in Los Angeles, and the recurring dreams that visit him make no sense to him. He seeks medical treatment at a sleep laboratory, where the resident doctor, Sam Goodman, tells him the dreams do not register as dreams at all. One evening, watching a television documentary called The Changing Face of America, Peter recognizes an arch and a church from his visions, and he calls the station to learn where the place is. The answer is Massachusetts, and he and his girlfriend Nora travel there. Driving from town to town, they are unsuccessful until Springfield, where Peter sees the bridge, the church and the Puritan statue from his dreams. Nora, who dismisses his search as delusion, returns to California.
