Plot summary
Gloria Wandrous wakes in an apartment that is not hers and finds her dress torn on the floor and a note with $250 from Weston Liggett, the man who spent the night there. Angry, she writes "No Sale" in lipstick on the mirror, leaves the cash and takes a mink coat from the closet before heading to Steve Carpenter. Steve, a composer and a friend since childhood, tells her she is wasting her life, and asks his girlfriend Norma to bring Gloria something to wear. Norma cannot accept how much Gloria means to Steve. Gloria tells her mother she slept at Norma's apartment; a neighbor scoffs. Wes, who works for his wife Emily's family chemical company, calls Gloria through her answering service to arrange another evening.

- Elizabeth Taylor took the lead in BUtterfield 8 only to fulfill her Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract, so she could leave for 20th Century Fox and Cleopatra; she and husband Eddie Fisher called the film "Butterball Four".
- Eddie Fisher wrote in his autobiography Been There, Done That that he and Elizabeth Taylor had sex during a lovemaking scene in the film, and the scene was cut before release.
- John O'Hara's 1935 novel behind the film drew on the death of Starr Faithfull, who was found drowned on a beach in Long Beach, New York, in 1931 after apparently being beaten.
