Plot summary
Susan Gilvray reports a prowler outside her home, and the officer who answers the call is Webb Garwood, a single man who is unhappy with his job as a Los Angeles policeman and quick to blame other people for his problems at work. Susan's husband, John Gilvray, is a radio personality who works at night, so she is alone in the house. Webb falls in love with her and becomes obsessed, and the two begin an affair. He also learns that her husband holds a life insurance policy, and he starts to work out a plan that Susan knows nothing about.

- Blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, a member of the Hollywood 10, wrote under the pseudonym of his friend Hugo Butler, who was himself blacklisted and wrote in exile for 12 years, also using pseudonyms to deceive the public.
- Director Joseph Losey cast Dalton Trumbo as the voice of the radio disc jockey John Gilvray; Losey himself faced blacklisting shortly after directing the film and would spend much of the rest of his career in Europe.
- John Huston, Sam Spiegel's partner at Horizon Pictures, believed the film would be the perfect project for Evelyn Keyes, his estranged wife, who had long complained about the lack of challenging roles offered to her.
- Because the film was produced independently, no studio helped preserve it and it was considered orphaned; after only one deteriorating print remained, the Film Noir Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive partnered to restore it.
