Plot summary
Nicky Collini lands a civil engineering job that will have him moving from one assignment to the next. Tacy, his fiancée, suggests they buy a trailer and live in it instead of paying for a house, so that she can travel with him and they can save. At a trailer show she is drawn to a large trailer home and talks him into it even though it is over their budget. A more powerful car and a trailer hitch are needed to pull it, and the costs keep climbing. The two marry and leave on their honeymoon, hauling the trailer toward his first job site in Colorado by way of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Nicky, new to towing, reluctantly goes along.

- The studio doubted audiences would pay to see Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in a film when they could watch the couple free on I Love Lucy, so Desi Arnaz bet the studio $25,000 that the film would out-gross Father of the Bride, and he won.
- In the mountain scenes, the couple's 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible was swapped for a similar-looking but larger 1953 Lincoln Capri, whose 205-HP Y-block V8 engine was needed to pull the heavy trailer up and over the Sierra Nevada grades.
- The opening scenes were shot on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Stage 12, the same stage where Desi Arnaz had played his first film scene, in Bataan in 1943.
- When MGM bought the film rights to Clinton Twiss's novel in May 1952, June Allyson was considered the most likely candidate for the female lead role.
- Lucille Ball, who had felt underused by MGM in the 1940s, returned to the studio for The Long, Long Trailer; she was given Lana Turner's old dressing room and Desi Arnaz was given Clark Gable's.
