Sergio Taylor is a basketball star at Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia and the best high school player in the country. His older brother June gave up his own basketball ambitions; after their father died, June supported the family on the streets, and their mother has struggled with addiction. Their sister Jackie wants a music career and meets Chris in the library, who offers to drive her home. June is confronted by a man, Zip's cousin, who warns that a shooter must be found, and the two fight. Needing money, Sergio is pressed by Sean and Dez to break into a house and takes the question to his uncle Ron's barbershop.
