Plot summary
In 1935 in Idlewild, Georgia, Percival spends his days working at his father's funeral home and his nights playing piano in Church, the club where Rooster, his friend since childhood, sings and sells smuggled liquor. Gangsters arrive at Church to talk over the arrangement they have with the place, and one of them, Trumpy, tells Rooster that a debt has become his and must be paid by moving liquor bought from Trumpy's suppliers. An aspiring singer shows up at the club calling herself Angel Davenport. Needing money, Rooster sends her out to perform. Her nerves show, so Percival offers to play alongside her, and the two perform a number he composed.
