Plot summary
Maggie Johnson works the stockroom of a Merrill five and ten cent store, and one day she is put on the sales counter, where she shows children's toys to a charming customer. The manager hands the man his time card: he is Joe Grant, a new stockboy, and in truth Joseph Merrill, the owner's son, who has taken the job under an assumed name to prove he is ready for his engagement. Annoyed, Maggie marches him back to the stockroom and finds him so inept that she calls him the dumbest stockboy in the world, though she offers to take him in hand. A few days later she waits outside after her shift and he chases the truck she rides home to return the bag she lets fall. Mrs. Merrill has plans for her son to wed Millicent Rogers.

- On October 31, 2017, the restaurant Best Girl opened on the ground floor of the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, named in the film's honor 90 years after its release.
- The 2015 restoration by the UCLA Film and Television Archive combined the best shots from two 35mm acetate fine grain master positives and a 1940s-era 16mm print, and added remade titles to improve the film's appearance.
