Plot summary
Ruby lives in Compton, California, and works as a registered nurse. She had been preparing to become a doctor. Now she spends most of her time at the prison where her husband, Derek, is serving an eight-year sentence, and she works for his early release. Flashbacks go back to the arrest that put him there. Brian, a bus driver, is clearly attracted to her. The pressure around Derek's case grows and her days narrow. Ruby's mother, Ruth, is bitter that neither of her daughters met the standards she set. Ruby's sister is Rosie, and Ruby has often looked after Rosie's son.
