Plot summary
Ruth wanders the American Midwest, which has gone eight years without rain, and her seizures trigger earthquakes. Bill, a scientist who wants to study and control her, offers her a ride; she wounds him and flees toward her old home. There her mother, Bo, lives with Lila, the daughter Ruth left behind and who has no memory of her. Bo can take objects apart and put them back together, and Lila shares the ability. Ruth's own powers turned destructive in her childhood, which is why she left. Bo and Lila try to help Ruth reconnect with them while the scientist and Sheriff Ellis, Bo's longtime friend and lover, follow her trail.
