Plot summary
In 1979, NASA scientist Dylan Hunt leads Project Ganymede, a hibernation experiment meant to carry astronauts through long spaceflights, and he is the first to volunteer for a multi-day test. He lies inside Carlsbad Caverns when an earthquake buries the laboratory and damages the monitoring equipment, which never wakes him. He emerges in 2133, after the Great Conflict, the final world war, into a world where new powers struggle over the resources left behind. PAX, descended from the NASA staff who worked at Carlsbad, gathers surviving knowledge and technology, and its members find Hunt sealed in his chamber and revive him. Teams travel beneath the globe through a subshuttle tunnel network. In the lands once called Arizona and New Mexico, the mutant Tyranians rule.

- On Star Trek, NBC's censors forced reshoots whenever a bare midriff showed a navel, so Gene Roddenberry made the Tyranians in Genesis II identifiable by a double navel, filming every censored navel twice over.
- The second Genesis II pilot, Planet Earth, replaced Alex Cord with John Saxon as Dylan Hunt and was declined; when further changes were proposed that Gene Roddenberry felt strayed too far from his Genesis II concept, he took his name off further development.
- A Genesis II episode concept, robots from a moon of Neptune evolved from computers left by a 1992 NASA expedition who visit Earth seeking the "God" named NASA, was later developed into the script for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
- Robert Hewitt Wolfe reused the name "Dylan Hunt" and many ideas from Gene Roddenberry's Genesis II notes when he created the Andromeda television series.
