Larry Pennell
Biography
Larry Pennell was an American actor who was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and grew up in California. Before acting he played baseball on a scholarship at the University of Southern California and later in the Boston Braves organization. His acting career began in 1955, and he appeared in films such as The Far Horizons (1955), The FBI Story (1959), The Great White Hope (1970), The Revengers (1972), and Marilyn: The Untold Story (1980), playing Clark Gable in the last. On television he starred as skydiver Ted McKeever in Ripcord from 1961 to 1963 and as Keith Holden in Lassie in 1972, and he was known for playing Dash Riprock on The Beverly Hillbillies. Later film credits included Mr. Baseball (1992) and Bubba Ho-tep (2002). He also worked in theater and won a best actor award at the 2002 Method Fest for the short film Five Minutes. He died in 2013.

A change of course
After coming home, Pennell's baseball contract was bought by the Brooklyn Dodgers, but he never showed up for spring training with the team. He chose acting instead, something he had tried during the offseason.
First role
Pennell's acting career started in 1955, when he played Oliver Brown in Seven Angry Men, a movie about abolitionist John Brown that starred Raymond Massey. That role brought him a lead in Hell's Horizon.
About the name
Pennell appeared in European films early in his acting career, among them the German production Old Surehand, which drew on a novel by Karl May. In those films he was sometimes billed as Alessandro Pennelli.
Behind the camera
Pennell took both writing and acting roles in The Signing and Close-Up. His performance in the short film Five Minutes earned him best actor at The Method Fest 2002.
Getting ready for a role
Pennell looked a lot like Clark Gable and took on that actor in three parts, among them the television film Marilyn: The Untold Story.
