Plot summary
Jack Jefferson, the heavyweight champion, defeats every white boxer around, and the press and others who want white athletes to hold the sports titles look for a white boxer able to take the championship from him. Jefferson prepares for a few more matches, and he courts Eleanor Bachman, a white woman. Everyone, including Jack's black wife, discovers this, and the tension around them rises sharply.

The film is based on the true story of boxer Jack Johnson and his first wife, Etta Terry Duryea, the controversy over their marriage, and Duryea's death by suicide in 1912.- Jane Alexander made her film debut in The Great White Hope and went on to earn three more Oscar nominations, while James Earl Jones won bigger roles after it.
