Plot summary
Mike Hawthorne brings his friends to a Halloween party at his grandparents' house. The guests come dressed as their innermost fears. Mike's own fear is a legacy: his father murdered his mother in front of him when he was five and then killed himself, and Mike believes the same impulse could live in him. It has kept him from committing to Peg, his girlfriend of four and a half years, because he is afraid he would kill her too. At the house, Morty, a wooden totem figure of ancient Indian origin, comes alive, and the fears the friends wear as costumes begin to find them.
