Plot summary
Jared-Syn, a criminal with supernatural powers, has reached the desert planet Lemuria, where humans live in scattered mining towns and gather crystals. Posing as the leader of the nomadic One Eyes, descendants of the vanished Cyclopians, he has stirred them into a holy war to drive the miners off the land, arming his followers with red crystals that drain the life from anyone they touch. The space ranger Dogen has followed Syn to Lemuria. He shoots down an attacking skybike and finds a crystal carved with a dead tree, then a murdered prospector whose daughter Dhyana witnessed the killing. She agrees to help him find Syn's camp and takes him to Zax, who reads the crystal as a device that stores lifeforce. Zax directs Dogen to the mining town of Zhor to seek a prospector named Rhodes.
