Plot summary
The Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 draws Jack Conroy from San Francisco to Alaska, where he means to take up his late father's mining claim, with the mushers Alex Larson and Clarence "Skunker" Thurston guiding him north. A wolf pack trails the party through the snow. When winter closes in, Jack and Alex stop at a town on the route. A Hän band meanwhile finds a wolfdog pup and brings him to their chief, Grey Beaver, who sees the color of the animal's teeth and names him White Fang. In spring the two men push on and stop at the Hän settlement, where Grey Beaver explains that the animal has been taught to obey rather than make friends. Jack sets out to change that, and when a grizzly bear charges him, White Fang steps in.
