Plot summary
Alfred Redl, a Ruthenian boy from Galicia, is admitted to a prestigious military academy even though his father is a peasant farmer. At the academy he is punished alongside a fellow cadet, Kristof Kubinyi. Redl's talent, ambition and loyalty to the Emperor set him apart, and when a teacher demands to know who played a practical joke, Redl names a different student so that Kubinyi will not be expelled. Kristof invites him to his family's home in Hungary, where Redl meets Kristof's sister, Katalin.

SPOILER
The real Redl was a spy in the pay of the Imperial Russian government, which blackmailed him over his homosexuality; when his treachery was uncovered, he was encouraged to commit suicide rather than forced to it over his sexuality.- The film depicts Redl as a Ruthenian peasant's son, but in fact his family was of German-Czech origin and middle-class; his father was a senior employee of the railways.
