Plot summary
In 2190 the station Pangea sits on the route to Europa One, Earth's first colony, refueling the ships that pass and staffed by crews serving ten-year shifts. Four Americans arrive for their term: Captain John Laine, engineer Jackie Miller, doctor Richard Valin and Lisa Brown. The first year passes amicably, and Laine and Miller become close. As the years go by the crew pulls apart. By the fifth year Laine suffers night terrors and Valin goes unwashed, and Valin must judge the crew unfit to continue. Before they absorb that decision, shockwaves from a large explosion strike the station. The crew tries again and again to reach Earth and hears nothing back.
