Plot summary
Charlotte, twelve, lives in a run-down New York apartment building with her mother Heather, her stepfather Ethan and her baby half-brother Liam, and is often left to herself. She finds a tiny spider that hatched from a strange glowing object which crashed into her great-aunt's apartment, and keeps it as a pet named Sting. The spider learns to whistle from her phone ringtone and grows at an alarming rate. Charlotte hides how large it is getting, but it becomes harder to conceal, and Ethan and the neighbors start noticing odd things in the building. Charlotte and Ethan are already at odds over her biological father.
