Jon Pertwee
Biography
Jon Pertwee was an English actor who became best known for playing the third Doctor in Doctor Who from 1970 to 1974 and for the title role in the children's series Worzel Gummidge. Raised in a family of actors and writers, he took small repertory parts before finding success in radio, where his comedy voices and impressions made his name on the sitcom The Navy Lark. He appeared in Carry On Cleo (1964), Carry On Cowboy (1965) and Carry On Screaming (1966), and in the horror anthology The House That Dripped Blood (1971). His Doctor was an action-oriented leading man rather than a comic turn, and he returned to the role for the anniversary special The Five Doctors (1983). Other films included One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing (1975) and Adventures of a Private Eye (1977). He died in 1996.

Big break
When Troughton departed the series in 1969, Tenniel Evans, Pertwee's co-star on The Navy Lark, urged him to go for the role. Pertwee was startled to learn the production team had already shortlisted him, and Ron Moody had declined the part, making Pertwee second choice.
About the name
Pertwee joined Springfield Theatre in Jersey, where a billing misspelled his name, and he took the name Jon from that error.
A role that slipped away
Pertwee was flown to Madrid on short notice to replace Phil Silvers in the film of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, though he ended up in a smaller role.
Getting ready for a role
Pertwee commissioned the Third Doctor's winged Whomobile car himself from car designer Peter Farries, and it was later written into the series.
Beyond film
Pertwee's 1972 single Who is the Doctor was a version of the Doctor Who theme with his own vocals on it.
