Plot summary
For twenty years Henry Holland has looked after gold bullion deliveries at a London bank, and he now plans to take a consignment for himself. The difficulty is getting the gold out of Britain, since selling it on the black market at home is too risky. At the Lavender Hill boarding house where he lives, he meets Alfred Pendlebury, an artist whose foundry makes presents and souvenirs for holiday destinations, Paris among them. Pendlebury's equipment could turn the bullion into small Eiffel Tower paperweights for export to France, and he agrees to help. When Holland learns that the bank intends to move him to another department, the two bring in Lackery Wood and Shorty Fisher, petty thieves, and set the robbery in motion.
