Plot summary
Nino Culotta comes from Italy to Sydney, expecting to write about sport for the Italian language magazine his cousin runs. The magazine has folded and left a debt to Kay Kelly, so Nino looks for work and says he will pay the debt back. The only job he can find is as a builder's laborer, among men whose slang and customs he cannot follow. He works at picking up the habits and ambitions of the Australians around him. Kay, whose father Harry is an Irish Australian who dislikes writers, brickies and Italians, keeps her distance. Nino is all three, and an attraction builds between them anyway.

- The film's actors built Nino's house at 128 Greenacre Road in Greenacre, a Sydney suburb, digging trenches, pouring concrete and laying bricks, before it was finished professionally and sold to raise funds for The Royal Life Saving Society.
- Alida Chelli, the girlfriend of Walter Chiari, almost did not get her part in the film because she was thought to be too glamorous and might have upstaged Claire Dunne.
- The film is credited with reviving the moribund Australian film industry and leading to the Australian "New Wave" films of the 1970s.
- By 1968 the film had earned $2 million, but according to John McCallum only $400,000 of it had been returned to the film-makers.
