Plot summary
Johnnie Bradfield holds the world southpaw boxing championship, and the public believes he does not drink and dotes on his mother. A reporter plans to report on Johnnie's confession that he is a drinker, and Johnnie's manager strikes the man and kills him. Johnnie takes the blame and, on his manager's advice, disappears; he is presumed dead. He settles on Grandma Rafferty's farm in Arizona as Jack Dorney, among the boys who live there under the guardianship of Tommy's sister Peggy. Detective Monty Phelan, whose error once put an innocent man in the electric chair, does not accept that Johnnie is gone and keeps searching for him.
