Plot summary
Maya Dolittle, a teenager and part-time veterinary assistant, has inherited her father John's ability to communicate with animals. Her friends believe she has lost her mind, and her parents frequently scold her. She has changed from a girl who kept to herself and cared mostly about science projects into a typical teenager. With John away on business, her mother Lisa decides Maya needs a change and sends her, along with her dog Lucky, to Durango, a dude ranch run by Jud Jones and his son Bo. Maya works hard to hide what she can do, afraid of how people will react to her, while the neighboring dude ranch keeps pressing to take Durango over.
