Plot summary

Billy Foster and Clyde Williams are blue-collar workers in Atlanta and friends in a fraternal lodge that is short of money, and Billy, as its treasurer, is expected to find some. Clyde can hypnotize, a skill from his time as an Army medic, and the pair revive an old scheme: back an underdog boxer and collect on the long odds. With their wives, Beth and Dee Dee, they travel to New Orleans, where the fighter Bootney Farnsworth loses his sparring sessions and impresses nobody, his coach included. Billy and Clyde slip into his hotel room and put him under, telling him he cannot be beaten. They bet what remains of the lodge's money with two gangsters, Kansas City Mack and Biggie Smalls.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Let's Do It Again (1975)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Writer Richard Wesley first pictured Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx as the leads of Let's Do It Again, but Warner Bros. wanted actors better known to mainstream America, so Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier played them instead.
  • Brooklyn rapper The Notorious B.I.G. took his alias Biggie Smalls from Calvin Lockhart's character in this film, but could not use the name as his own because of ownership issues.
  • Curtis Mayfield wrote the music and The Staple Singers sang it; their title song "Let's Do It Again" was a number one hit on both the R&B and Pop charts, and Wesley credited much of the film's success to the song, which came out before the film.
  • Rap group Camp Lo titled their second album Let's Do It Again and their debut Uptown Saturday Night after the two Cosby and Poitier films, and musician Fonzworth Bentley took his stage name from Jimmie Walker's character Bootney Farnsworth.
  • Names in the film were borrowed from writer Richard Wesley's own life: 40th Street Black was the nickname of a kid at a camp his brother attended, and Bootney came from two brothers he grew up with, Lil Bootney and Big Bootney, known as fighters in the community.
