Jerry Paris
Biography
Jerry Paris was an American actor and director who shifted from performing to directing. Born in San Francisco, he served in the Navy during World War II and later studied at the Actors Studio and the Actors Lab in Hollywood. His film roles included The Caine Mutiny (1954), The Wild One and Marty (1955), and he played Martin Marty Flaherty in the first season of The Untouchables. From 1961 to 1966 he appeared as dentist Jerry Helper on The Dick Van Dyke Show, in 39 of its 158 episodes. In 1963 Carl Reiner gave him his first directing job on that series; he became a regular director and won a Primetime Emmy for comedy directing in 1964. He went on to direct The Partridge Family and Here's Lucy, then directed 237 of the 255 episodes of Happy Days. His later feature work included Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985) and Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986).
