Plot summary
Lordsburg has a visitor: John Gant, a gunman who kills for pay. The sheriff wants to jail him, but Gant shoots only in what he can call self-defense, so the law cannot touch him. The town speculates about who his target is, and every leading citizen can name an enemy who might have hired him. Luke Canfield, a young doctor, meets the stranger without knowing his reputation and takes him on a tour of the town. Luke and his blacksmith father, Asa, then join Anne Benson, Luke's fiancée, and her father at dinner. The sheriff interrupts the meal with a warning to stay clear of Gant. Mine owners Earl Stricker and Thad Pierce decide their partner Ben Chaffee has engaged the gunman against them, and Chaffee, learning of their meeting, believes they have hired Gant against him.
