Plot summary
Brian Weathersby sells mattresses at a warehouse store. His father and his older brothers have done well for themselves; what he wants is a child, and he has applied to adopt one from China. Someone who appears homeless follows him. Happy Lolly, whose father is a rich and quirky customer, comes into the store, lies down on a bed and falls asleep. She holds on to nothing for long, but she and Brian get along, though the mention of his adoption makes her ill.

- Aselton, the youngest child in his family, had wanted his parents to adopt a Chinese baby so that he could have a younger sibling; he and co-writer Adam Nagata built the story around Brian's wish to adopt a baby, and Aselton's own younger brother did later adopt one.
- Paul Dano liked the script and was one of the first actors to sign on, which attracted others to the cast; to prepare, he talked to salesmen at the mattress store Sleepy's and bought Chinese language tapes to learn some of the language, as his character did.
