Plot summary
Abe Cross rides into town after his hopes as a gold prospector come to nothing, and his name is enough that the town expects him to face Will Tenneray, who trades on his own gunfighter legend while working at the saloon. Rather than enemies, the two men find they like each other. Money is short for both of them, though, and Tenneray puts a proposition to Cross: a duel in the bullfight arena, with admission sold to the crowd and the takings handed to the winner. Cross likes the idea of the paid spectacle. Tenneray tells Nora, his wife, that killing his best friend would be a loss, and neither man welcomes the thought of the other's death.
