Plot summary
Diane Arbus is a wife and mother of two daughters in New York City in 1958, working as an assistant to her husband Allan. Allan is a photographer sponsored by Diane's wealthy parents. A neighbor, Lionel Sweeney, moves into the apartment upstairs, and when hair clogs the plumbing and a key tumbles out of the pipe, Diane traces both to him. Lionel has hypertrichosis, a condition causing excessive body hair, and works as a wigmaker. She takes up a camera Allan gave her years earlier and asks to photograph Lionel, who tells her to return the next night. He takes her to meet transvestites, dwarves and other people on the margins. Diane asks Allan for time away from the family studio to take her own pictures and stores her undeveloped film in a cookie jar.
