Plot summary
After a political rise that took him from the New York assembly to the Navy Department, Franklin D. Roosevelt is stricken with polio at thirty-nine and loses the use of his legs. He lives in semi-isolation on a Florida houseboat, refusing to be a burden, until a storm wrecks the boat and his adviser Louis Howe arrives to urge a return to public life. His old friend George Foster Peabody invites him instead to the Meriweather Inn at Warm Springs, Georgia, whose mineral waters are said to have let a disabled boy walk. Franklin travels there with his wife, Eleanor. The inn is rundown, and manager Tom Loyless offers him a one-story cottage. Eleanor urges a return to New York, but Franklin refuses.
