Plot summary
Matthew Morgan, an American professor in his eighties, is retired and a widower. He makes his home in Paris and speaks no French. Since his wife died he has been marking time. He meets Pauline Laubie, a dance instructor who is less than half his age. She is solitary as well, and she wants the connection of a family. His two grown children then travel from the United States to see how he is doing, and they are sure she is after his money.
