Plot summary
In 2033 the planet is a desert, and Kesslee's Water & Power decides who drinks. Rebecca "Tank Girl" Buck belongs to an outback commune that runs the last well outside the corporation's grip. When W&P troops overrun the commune, they kill Richard, her boyfriend, and seize her and young Sam. At the W&P compound, Kesslee has Tank Girl enslaved and tortured rather than killed, and she keeps resisting. Jet Girl, a skilled but withdrawn jet mechanic who no longer tries to escape the corporation, urges her to cause less trouble for their captors, and Tank Girl refuses. Then the Rippers storm the compound.

- Requests went out to all the major make-up and effects people, including Stan Winston, whose prior work included the Terminator films, Aliens and Jurassic Park; Talalay did not expect to afford his studio, but Winston insisted on the project and his studio halved its usual prices.
- MGM held open casting sessions in London, Los Angeles and New York for the role of Tank Girl, and Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell can be seen standing next to each other in footage from the event, where two or three of the Spice Girls met in the queue.
- Talalay had been pushing the studio to cast English actress Emily Lloyd and then fired her, she says for refusing to cut her hair; Lloyd, who had spent four months training, says filming was going well until Talalay learned she was staying at the same hotel as Sarafian.
- A “naked Ripper suit” with a prosthetic penis was built for Booga and used in a filmed postcoital scene that the studio insisted be removed, and the scene in which Kesslee tortures Tank Girl was cut heavily because she appeared “too ugly” while being tortured.

The studio cut the original ending, a live-action scene in which it begins to rain; the film was to have closed with Tank Girl burping.- The main tank was a modified M5A1 Stuart bought from the government of Peru about 12 years before filming: its 37 mm antitank gun was covered with a modified flag pole to look like a 105 mm gun, and an entire 1969 Cadillac Eldorado was welded onto it.
- The soundtrack featured Björk's “Army of Me” before it was released as a single, and because of the film's box-office failure both Björk and her label decided not to use any footage from it in the song's music video.
