Plot summary
O.M. Rivers is a multimillionaire with two grown children. His son Sonny is gay and his daughter Bitsy is a lesbian. Their father knows about Bitsy, but he does not know about Sonny until he catches him with his lover. Sonny admits he is gay and O.M. has a heart attack. A priest prompts him to alter the will. His $200 million fortune is to be divided between Sonny, Bitsy and the gardener, but one of the siblings must have a child through heterosexual intercourse within a year, or the church receives the money.

- Robert Downey Sr. said people he and his collaborators met while shopping the script believed that with the AIDS crisis going on, a "movie with gays wasn't commercial," so big names were needed to get Too Much Sun made.
- Director Robert Downey Sr. cut a scene from Too Much Sun that he felt went too far, in which Eric Idle "swishes by and tosses off a lewd double entendre about lesbian sex." Downey said he wanted a funny movie that did not "stoop to cheap shots about gays."
- Alan Arkin was set to play the priest in Too Much Sun but was unavailable, and according to Robert Downey Sr. it was Arkin's name that helped "sell the movie to distributors in the first place."
