Plot summary
Montague L. Brewster, a soldier newly discharged after fighting in Europe, returns to New York City meaning to marry his sweetheart, Peggy Gray. A windfall delays those plans: his late uncle's estate names him heir to $8 million, on a condition. He may collect it only if he spends one million of it, keeping nothing to show for it, by his thirtieth birthday, which is two months off, on October 13, 1944. The lawyer says the uncle hoped the spree would cure him of any taste for spending. Brewster also may not tell anyone what he is doing. He agrees, sets up Brewster & Company, makes his wartime friends Hacky Smith and Nopper Harrison vice presidents and Peggy his private secretary, and finds that his schemes to lose money keep turning profitable instead.
