Plot summary
The trader Aloysius Horn, known as Trader Horn, is on safari in an unexplored part of Africa with his companion Peru. The two come upon Edith Trent, a missionary killed by a tribe, and learn that she had been looking for her daughter Nina, lost in that country. Horn and Peru decide to carry on her search. Rencharo serves Horn as translator and majordomo.

- While Trader Horn was being filmed in Africa, an African crewman fell into a river and was eaten by a crocodile, and another crewman was killed by a charging rhinoceros. The rhinoceros attack was captured on camera and the shot was used in the finished film.
- Female lead Edwina Booth became infected during filming in Africa, probably with malaria or schistosomiasis, and took six years to recover fully. She retired from acting soon afterwards and sued MGM; the case was settled out of court.
- Many of the film's animal scenes were shot in Tecate, Mexico, by a second unit to get around American animal-cruelty laws. Lions were reportedly starved so they would attack hyenas, monkeys and deer viciously on camera.
- A sound crew sent halfway through the African shoot could not produce good-quality work, so most of the dialogue was reshot at MGM's Culver City studios. The reshooting led to rumors that the whole film had been made there, so most of that footage was cut from the release.
