Harold Lloyd
Biography
Harold Lloyd was an American silent comedy actor and stunt performer, and one of the most influential comedians of the silent era. Born in Burchard, Nebraska, he developed an early interest in theater and performed with repertory companies before moving to Los Angeles, where he took juvenile roles in Keystone comedies. He collaborated with Hal Roach, first creating the Lonesome Luke character and later adopting his trademark glasses persona. His feature comedies included Grandma's Boy (1922), Safety Last! (1923), Why Worry? (1923), Girl Shy (1924), The Freshman (1925), The Kid Brother (1927), and Speedy (1928). He formed his own production company in 1924 and successfully transitioned to sound with Welcome Danger (1929), later appearing in Feet First (1930), Movie Crazy (1932), and The Cat's-Paw (1934). In 1953 he received an Academy Honorary Award. He died in 1971.

A change of course
Lloyd worked with Hal Roach, who started his own studio in 1913. Together they made the Lonesome Luke character, a comic grotesque in loud clothes and a false mustache, after Charlie Chaplin's success.
Getting ready for a role
To give his new character a distinctive look, Harold Lloyd adopted a pair of horn-rimmed glasses that had no lenses.
Behind the camera
Lloyd and Roach split in 1924, and Lloyd set up the Harold Lloyd Film Corporation as his own independent production company. He made feature films exclusively, first through Pathé and then Paramount.
A change of course
In October 1944, Harold Lloyd took on directing and hosting duties for The Old Gold Comedy Theater, an NBC radio anthology series. Preston Sturges had declined the job and put Lloyd's name forward instead.

Lloyd's 1962 compilation Harold Lloyd's World of Comedy premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was celebrated as a major rediscovery.

Lloyd was the fourth person to leave handprints and footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, in 1927, along with the outline of his glasses.
