Plot summary
Harold Hall has almost no acting ability and wants a place in the movies anyway. A mix-up with the photograph on his application brings an invitation to a screen test, and he sets off for Hollywood. On the studio lot he gets everything wrong and creates trouble wherever he goes, but an actress named Mary Sears takes an interest in him. Harold meets Mary at her home without recognizing her as the woman he saw at the studio, and she puts him through a set of tests of his loyalty in romance, while he stays fixed on the screen persona he admires.

- Clyde Bruckman, who had directed Harold Lloyd's first two talkie films, was recruited to direct Movie Crazy, with Lloyd also producing. Bruckman's worsening alcoholism led Lloyd to take over directing himself, without taking the credit.
- In 1962, Harold Lloyd produced a compilation film, Harold Lloyd's World of Comedy, that included scenes from Movie Crazy. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and renewed interest in Lloyd by introducing him to a new generation.
