Plot summary
Harold Meadows is a tailor's apprentice in Little Bend, California, and he stutters so badly around women that his uncle blows a whistle to break the stammer. He is writing The Secret of Making Love, a guidebook for bashful young men, and he rides a train to Los Angeles to find a publisher. Mary Buckingham, who is rich, takes that same train after her automobile breaks down. The railway does not permit dogs, so she tucks her Pomeranian beneath her shawl; the dog jumps out as the train leaves, and Harold brings it back and keeps it out of the conductor's sight. Mary notices his manuscript, and he talks about the book without stumbling. At home she turns down another proposal from Ronald DeVore, an older suitor.
