Plot summary
Dr. Ludwig von Saulsbourg has spent nearly four years treating a young woman with enforced rest, darkness and drugs, and charging her father large fees while her own sense of her health only worsens. She is physically well. When the family lawyer, Jamison, urges the father to bring in a consulting physician, von Saulsbourg answers by pushing his costly sanitarium. The consultant is Jack Jackson, known to his patients as Dr. Jack, a country doctor in Magnolia Meadows who favors sunlight and looks for what truly troubles people. He recognizes that the young woman is physically healthy and that she needs excitement. He had met her once, when she passed through his town, and fell for her at first sight, which may make him unfit to treat her.
